ARKnet Technical Symposium, March 4, 2004

ARKnet is announcing the second of its series of Technical Symposiums. These are meant to be informal sessions during which technical support staff at our member institutions can gather to discuss pertinent issues that affect us all. The atmosphere is relaxed so that we can exchange information and ideas about common problems and solutions at our institutions. There will generally be an announced topic, and may not necessarily include a prepared presentation.

This symposium will focus on two major topic areas:

1. Bandwidth management and monitoring
2. Spam detection and filtering

We want to hear about how your organization deals with these two important IT functions. Do you know what bandwidth your users and applications are consuming on your local area network and on your Internet connection? Where do you collect this information and how do you use it? What products do you use? Does your mail server do spam detection? Or do you rely upon filtering by mail clients? What products do you use, if any? What kinds of filtering rules do you use? How successful does your filtering work? Are your users satisfied? We think that discussion about what we are doing, what is working, and what is not will be beneficial to all participants.

This symposium will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2004, 10:30 A.M. - 1:30 P.M., at the University of Arkansas Systems Office, 2404 North University Avenue, Little Rock. To get there, take the North University Avenue exit off Interstate-630, travel north for 2.0 miles (you will pass through major intersections with Markham and Cantrell) to the intersection of N. University and Hawthorne Rd. The entrance to the campus is to the left. Enter through the front gates and stay left at the Y intersection to go to the main office building, which is the first building on the left. This is where the symposium will be held. ARKnet will provide box lunches for those attending, but we need a head count IN ADVANCE so that we can notify the caterer. Please RSVP by sending email to David Merrifield, dlm@uark.edu. The deadline for the RSVP is March 3.

Please note that the ARKnet Board of Directors will meet at the same location at 1:30 P.M. immediately following the Symposium.
